I feel that professional learning communities are important to collaborate and grow with peers. It is a great way to discover new ideas and share your own knowledge. Currently, I am apart of our second grade PLC. The past three years I was the chairperson for the grade level team. I stepped down this year, so that others could have a chance to lead and due to so many other obligations. As grade level chair, I was responsible for facilitating our PLC meetings, creating agendas, and keeping time. I was also the one responsible for communicating ideas and concerns to the campus principal and vice versa. I enjoy our PLC meetings because I love the discussions and ideas brought to the table about learning and teaching. I like getting others opinions and hearing their strategies for teaching. I am also on several committees on my campus that I feel can be considered PLNs. I am a member of our NEU Leadership committee. This committee collaborates and creates ways to incorporate our NO EXCUSES University symbolism in the classroom and around our school. It also promotes college readiness and student leadership. I am a member of our interview committee for hiring new teachers.
I am also apart of our district technology team and am on a committee to collaborate and design a STEAM bus. This is very exciting for our district. We have received a large amount of funds from a donor for this bus and are researching and collaborating on how to design and implement the bus in our district and possibly surrounding districts. On this committee, I am able to contribute my ideas and teaching strategies, while also learning from upper grade levels. There are six members, one elementary teacher (me), one junior high teacher, one high school teacher, one asst. principal, and our technology director and technology specialist. It has been very interesting learning everyones perspectives of technology and STEAM as it relates to our students and coming together to provide a learning opportunity for all grade levels in such a small space.
I have also joined several PLNs through social media and via web. Twitter is an excellent source for collaboration and learning. I can spend several hours reading articles on best teaching practices and technology in the classroom through Twitter. I will admit though, I do not contribute as I should on Twitter. I will post things I am doing in my classroom, but there is never any back and forth communication. I am also apart of the Principal Principles Leadership & Learning Community on Facebook. There are some great post on this page regarding leadership. I have felt that I can't contribute much since I am not in a leadership role, but I love reading and learning what principals are doing in their schools.
I joined several TCEA communities and edweb communities. I am excited to see what I can learn from these communities and want to do a better job and contributing my ideas.
